Update of Current Games

Charge!

We took Charge! to the UnpubMini in SD last weekend and it was a blast. The day started off slow but all that changes when we came back from lunch. Before I was finished with my food, I had my first group of people ask to play the game. For the next 6 hours I was talking about and playing Charge! The feedback was great, nothing systemic (which was awesome!). At one point I had a play tester sit at the table for about an hour and before she left, she was running the demo for me!

A) That was awesome

B) My voice was on the verge of collapse, so the break was welcomed.

The feedback forms we had after the show were all positive. May people asked when the game would be available and we have started a list of people to contact when the Kickstarter campaign is live. It is great to feel like the development of the game is done and now we can focus on art and send out review copies once the art is done. We will probably get a PnP file together as well. If you would like to get your hands on the PnP file please shoot us an email and we will keep a list of interested people.

Priests of Olympus

Priests of Olympus also went to SD and it was just as successful as Charge! The feedback we got was great. There were no systemic changes anyone wanted for the game. What we like to ask people when they have constructive criticism of the game is if the game did not include their suggestions, would it be a deal breaker for the game, or would they still play/buy it. No one said no. Now you could say they just didn’t want to answer truthfully in front of the designers, but judging by the way people answered our questions, we believe they were sincere. People enjoyed the simple yet strategic combat system. The game played in a good amount of time. While Aidan was running the Priests table, it seemed like people were able to pick up the game quickly. I will leave more of the details to Aidan but from what I was able to see and hear, it was a great test.

We believe we are done with the development of this game as well. We just need to move onto art and then we we can work on getting review copies out to people. This will have a PnP file as well, if you would like the files when they are ready please let us know.

Testing/UnPub Mini SD

Our trip down to SD was an incredible trip. We feel great about what we have put together so far and we were able to meet a lot of great designers and great play testers. Thank you to Galvanized Studios for putting the even together, they dud a great job.

We did learn some great lessons at this event and we now have a really good feel for what we want to do in future events like this. The biggest lesson is to bring a friend that is willing to take pictures and document the day. The two pictures I have here are the only two pictures I was able to take the whole day. I will probably write more about this in a H2BaG series.

Podcast

The first episode of Cardboard Architects is online. We are working on the submission process for iTunes and working on all the little things I need to learn about that go into posting a spreading the news about the podcast. We hope you enjoy and hope you stick around for more episodes to come.

Update of Current Games

I think the big news for us is that we are going to attend UnPubMini in San Diego, Nov 15th. We will be taking Charge! and Priests of Olympus with us. We are looking forward to meeting new people and getting to play our games at an unpub event for the first time.

Soccer GM

We did not have a chance to work on Soccer GM this weekend. Aidan is the lead for Soccer GM so he may have put some work into Soccer GM during the week. I think we are at a point were we need to run two or three more test between the two of us and we need to make an alpha board and we will be ready to test with real live people!

Arrrsteroid Miners

I didn’t get a chance to look at this project this week.

Charge!

We have ordered new decks for the upcoming UnPub event in San Diego. We have some promotional material to work on over the next week or two and we we need to keep plugging away on the rules.

Dice Inc. / Priests of Olympus

Priests of Olympus will be making its first public appearance at UnPubMini in San Diego. We have the prototypes made already and we need to make a nice place holder art version of the prototype so we can get some people to sit down at our table.

Line Drive

In the interested of moving stranded projects along, we have made a board for Line Drive, our baseball game. Since we were done with the rules and ready to test, it made more sense to have a board for the game, so we made one, and now we are going to test it. No time like the present.

The Flicked Element

The Flicked Element is a dexterity game we whipped up months ago, tested it with some friends and it worked really well. The problem has always been the board we used was a piece of poster board, which is tough to transport, and we could never find a reasonably sized substitute for the board. We ended up finding a precut presentation foam core board that folds up and lied flat. There is a small issue with a warp in the board but I think we can fix it with some time and some weights. As soon as that is fixed (as much as it can be) we are going to test the game.

Testing

Looks like we have a lot of testing ahead of us. I am really looking forward to it since it would be nice to have a “portfolio” of options to test with people at our FLGS and the 2-3 game groups we game with during the month.

Podcast

Jon from Sarcastic Robot and myself have recorded the first pilot test episode. It is now on me to get the editing done and out to our test listeners so they can give us some initial feedback.

If you would like to listen to our pilot episode, please email me at c.renshall.tgik.games@gmail.com. The Podcast will be a 15-20 minute microcast focused on the design side of board games. We want to provide a window into the world of design while exploring the use of design concepts and ideas.

Side Projects

Chris

This is a bit long term-ish idea but I really like the watch it played speed play of Five Tribes. I talked to Aidan about the idea of doing something similar with our own twist. Do you think that is something you would watch? If you knew all the information at the table, would it be fun to watch the players in the game make bad guesses or errors in judgement? Tell me what you think, I am really excited about the possibilities of doing this project and would like some initial thoughts.

Update of Current Games

This was the first weekend where I worked full time on both Saturday and Sunday to move TGIK Games forward. Sadly, not very much of it was current or new game related, but I did do a lot of the behind the scenes set up stuff that makes doing what we want to do on a regular basis smoother and more efficient.

Soccer GM

Second weekend in a row we did not get to work on Soccer GM. It might be a little bit until we get back to this game, at least on the weekend, because we need to focus on other things. Soccer GM is top of the list for projects to develop when we get back, but for now, the game is what it is.

Arrrsteroid Miners

At this point, I have done as much as I can with the prototype that includes all the elements Aidan and I have discussed. The next part of the prototype process is to work on the market system Aidan has up his sleeve and finish up the NPC pirates and miners.

Charge!

We have our first art files! Please feel free to tell us what you think. You can comment on the post or email me at c.renshall.tgik.games@gmail.com.

A little walk through of what you are looking at. The first file is what we are now looking at as the card backs. We really like the shield and the wings. The crown and the other embellishments are not high on out list but we really want to get people’s feedback. The various shield and sword files were the intended card backs but the work better as a game icon where the shield and wings has a “coolness” to them. The two files that include the blue flamed catapult balls are a look at the overall color pallet we are looking at using for Charge!

As well as the art, we have started working on a last edit of the rules before we send them out to the layout artist.

Those are the two big developments on Charge! Art and finalizing rules.

Dice Inc. / Priests of Olympus

We talked briefly about the name “Priests of Olympus” and we decided we were going to stick with that as the new title. While this is the other rule book we need to focus on, we need to finish the other book first and this will be next.

Tree House Kids: See You After School

This is our newest game. The idea is the player will run or be part of one of two teams of kids. Each team will have a tree house as their base and half a field to start a game. Battles will be fought after school and while everyone is at school, each team will be working to get other school kids to join their team. Each team will be allowed to build expansions onto their tree house. Kids will use fun weapons like plunger bolt cross bows and dog droppings grenades. We have spent a grand total of an hour talking about how this game will work. This means that nothing is set in stone right now but we are both excited about making this a live project and it will join the game queue.

Side Projects

Chris

DUe to technical difficulties, we were not able to record an episode of the podcast last week. So, we are going to try again this week.

If you would like to listen to our pilot episode, please email me at c.renshall.tgik.games@gmail.com. The Podcast will be a 15-20 minute microcast focused on the design side of board games. We want to provide a window into the world of design while exploring the use of design concepts and ideas.

Update of Current Games

Nothing profound or life changing to say before we get to the games…..Nothing to see here folks…..move along!

We were able to move the mechanics along to a point where we can finish the last few parts of the prototype and get in our first plays of the game. When I started Arrrsteroid Miners, I was thinking I could make a prototype from the very beginning and well, I have been proven wrong. I was able to build 1/3 of the pieces needed but had to flesh out some of the mechanics in order to make a reasonable prototype.

Charge!

Big news, we have our first big meeting for art work. Up until now, we have been talking about ideas, but not laid out a plan. Tuesday, we are going to lay out a plan and you will be able to see the art as we progress through the process.

Dice Inc.

The theme-less wonder that is Dice Inc has been re-themed and renamed. Priests of Olympus is the new name for the game. We spend a lot of time trying to fit the mechanics to a real world example and well, that was a bit of a disaster. After 2 hours of trying to think of options, we left the real world and went with a more forgiving theme. Even though the mechanics of the game are based in reality and very close to actual market transactions, we could not get a match that felt right, so we went a completely different direction and went with players being Gods upon Mt. Olympus, moving their priests around the world gaining followers.

Line Drive

In the interested of moving stranded projects along, we have made a board for Line Drive, our baseball game. Since we were done with the rules and ready to test, it made more sense to have a board for the game, so we made one, and now we are going to test it. No time like the present.

I have the same side project that is starting for real this week. Last week we have a scheduling problem so we had to push back our first recording day to this coming Wednesday. I guess I will have to move the Podcast to the regular updates section at some point? I have left the description of our podcast below and my contact email if you would like to hear the pilot episode.
